Task 7

Global Warming Global Warming 3mOor-

Task 6

Cool Cities

A range of environmental problems currently has an effect on our entire world. As globalization carries on and the earth converts local problems into international issues, a small number of societies are being left unaffected by major environmental problems. These problems involve air and water pollution, climate change, over population, recourse depilation and urban growth. Going on in this way we would be threatened by our future and these issues would grow massively.

We need to be aware that these issues can cause a lot of damage to the world. Each country has to focus much more on solving these issues. The UAE as an example is launching “Masdar” the world’s first Carbon-Neutral City. A zero carbon, zero waste, car free zone, which will be established in Abu Dhabi in the next couple of years. This city will contain sustainable transportation, waste management, water and waste water protection, green construction, recycling and renewable energy. In addition this city will accomplish unique levels of insist reduction such as:

· 75% reduction in installed power capacity

· Water needs cut by more than half

· Landfill area strictly reduced

· Car free zone

Furthermore, these are some of the methods that are being considered to make our environment safer. In Masdar you will have no choice but to leave your car outside the city and use the PRT “Personal Rapid Transit” automobiles is the only way of transportation in this free pollution city. Keeping the hot desert wind out of the city, a huge wall will be built surrounding it, in addition to shaded streets that will also guide breezes from one side of the city to the other.

However, we are still facing these issues, although we can help by starting to care more about the environment and it is important that we don’t quit. If only each and every one of us choose to help make the environment an improved and healthier place to live in.

Task 5

FOOT PRINT

In developed countries and regions around the word humans have done many acts that affected the environment. The concept of ecological footprint is known as the impact of individual societies on nature. There is no limit in construction and digging under the Earth’s surface and this can cause a lot of harm to the atmosphere around us. In the UAE for example, all skyscrapers, new islands and bridges resulted in a large population. There are many different views about ecological footprints and there are many reasons that lead the environment to be damaged.

There are a variety of different opinions about ecological footprints. Firstly, David Schaller's position was that wealthy nations are to blame because of their economic demand and consumption (Schaller.2001). Much evidence supported his opinion. One of them was that the US population is 5% of the world’s population; although the percentage is low, they consume 20% to 40% of energy In addition, he said that an eight year old child in the US has a larger ecological footprint than poor women in Africa (Schaller.2001). On the other hand, Peter Huber's position was that poor countries were the main reason for this issue. He said that despite the low amount of food that they eat. But they kill animals and cut down trees more than other countries. Furthermore, they create a higher percentage of waste that the developed countries, Also he claimed that their lake of knowledge caused them to be unaware of the damage that they cause to their environment (Huber, 2001). For example, burning uranium is much harder, but a tiny volume of it can heat and light an entire city.

The damage of humans on the environment has increased, but many solutions are suggested. To begin with, people created a lot of waste and rubbish. Taking away this rubbish or burning it can cause a dangerous impact on the environment. Because humans use a lot of natural resources in enormous amounts, such as trees, oil, and coal. Secondly, the earth, air, water and soil have been polluted by humans' bad habits. Air damaged by car and lorry fumes, and power stations create acid rain which kills entire forests (Young People’s Trust for the environment.2008). Finally, the Ozone layer is a broad band which prevents the sun’s ultra-violet rays from reaching humans. Air conditioners and fridges are reasons to make a hole in the ozone layer which leads to a serious problem among human lives.

In conclusion, it does not actually take all that much effort to help keep our environment clean. All of us are required to contribute and try to reduce the damage that we do to the environment. One of the well-known ways is recycling specially paper so we can help decrease the consumption of natural resources. Second, people should limit the use of cars and machines that use resources. Instead, people should use cars and machines that depend on the solar system. Finally, we must consider saving the ozone layer so that the next generation can live in peace. This can be done by reducing the amount of harmful chemicals like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in the country. In addition, government must support the environmental organizations in order to help in saving the environment. Also, people can provide these organizations with suggestions that have been listed before.

Summary 3

The European Union Could Save The World

There is a deal struck by the European Union which is important. They should have established and taken the initiative a long time back. They are the masters for handling and solving climate changes and issues. The objective was to lower carbon dioxide by reducing 20% by 2020. The commitment mechanism is making use of renewable energy such as water.

The plan is capturing carbon and storing technology where farmers, car drivers, etc. will play a vital role in doing so. Even though the plan is backed up there are problems that will be faced and the reason is the expensiveness of renewable energy. However, it should be done now by burning less fossil fuel.

The European Union will try to deliver benefits that should be achieved by any country collective rather than any single country because carbon remains at the centre stage. There are serious climate changes expected once the initiative is in place. The deal is not just at the European level but it really matters at the global level.

They have to be tough to obtain their targets and accomplish their objectives. There should be reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by including Americans, Indians and Chinese. If it happens to be less than it is expected the world will be at risk.

There are possibilities to increase the rate by 10% more and it is certain that the European Union is moving forward. The other countries can follow to achieve the objective and make the world a better place. This will ensure achievement of objectives and results more than is expected.

Main Idea

The European Union is trying to make an agreement to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions, not just in Europe but in all the countries, to make the world a better place.

People have an important role to play to make this agreement successful. Even if the agreement is going to face problems.

Comment

In my opinion the article is discussing a major problem that really needs to be solved and needs every single person in the world to do his best to reach the goal of making the world a better place to live in. Moreover the governments should work harder to find more solutions for this issue.

Task 2

Global Warming

Defines as a gradual increase in the earth's surface temperature caused by human and nature. In this essay I will be talking about the causes and solutions of this dangerous problem, that is affecting negatively on the humans, animals and plants. First let’s talk about the causes. Carbon dioxide (CO2), exhaust from cars and power plants, Carbon Dioxide from Buildings, Methane gas and Electrical pollution are some of the main causes of the global warming. Moreover the rising of the sea level is a natural problem that affects plants and animals on islands.

To solve this problem or to decrease the harm of the global warming we can use bikes or alternative ways of transportation other than cars to reduce the green house gases emitted by cars. Moreover the government should recycle things like bottles, papers and cans.

Finally, in my opinion I think 50% of the global warming is caused by human so I suggest finding and trying to reduce gases as much as we can to stop or at least decrease this major problem.

Summary 2

Summary

Urning Torso is a new project that is in Sweden's new Western Harbor development. This is an example of several projects that are evolving in Sweden. The projects all have the same goal which is promoting biodiversity.

The planners demanded that the developers choose ten features in their building that promoted biodiversity, for example installing shelves for the birds to nest on. There were also employed ecologists that monitored the progress. Species already started moving in like sea birds, blackbirds, wagtails, bats, etc. Even though promoting biodiversity was the main goal of those projects people bought the houses there because of their appearance and location.

There is also an ecologically themed playschool. Some of the food served there is organic, the rubbish goes in recycling bins and the trip's aim is to make the children more aware of biodiversity. The ideas behind Western Harbour are now being put into practice in all Malmo’s environmental building program.

Main idea

Creating a new city in Western Harbour and developing it with the goal of promoting biodiversity.

Comment

In my opinion doing these projects in a right way will promote biodiversity and may be used in other countries as well. And it will help the buildings to become safer and more comfortable.
